HIS FACE IN MY JOURNEY
Changing the Way You Think
"Don’t copy the behavior and customs of this world, but let God transform you into a
new person by changing the way you think. Then you will learn to know God’s will for
you, which is good and pleasing and perfect." Romans 12:2 (New Living Translation)
As I arrived for my blood draw appointment one afternoon, I anticipated a long wait. I had learned how
to turn negative ‘wait’ times into positive ‘God’ times, so with bible and notebook in hand, I looked forward
to spending some quiet time with Him. It turned out that I was called in right away, and I was actually a
I noticed my phlebotomist looked tired and worn out, so I asked her how she was feeling. She told me about
her recent knee fracture and that it was her first day back to work. Her knee was acting up and there had been
some difficult patients that morning. She said you can’t always have a good day, maybe the next one would be
better. We talked some more and her spirits perked up and I left there believing that my care had made her day a
little bit brighter.
Hospitals, physicians offices and blood drawing stations were not my preferred places to hang out. But after many months of frequenting such joints, I was able to laugh at the fact that I was using my health insurance card more frequently than my credit card (well, at least in the beginning...). The Lord was using my situation to
change the way I think. He was teaching me how to have a positive attitude about
the unpleasant ways I was spending my time. As I grew more into my changed mindset,
I gained the courage to ask the people I encountered if I could pray for them. Not only was
I finding opportunities to spend time with God and bless other people, but God was releasing
His joy to me as I watched others being blessed.
When we are consumed with our own personal crisis, we don't naturally reach out to others. We must be nudged by the Spirit of God. He invites us to join Him in releasing His healing touch to others, and through the process, gives us reassurance that indeed He is healing us, too.
